Chalk it up to Green

Chalk it up to Green

Denver Chalk Art Festival is working with the City of Denver with its “Greenprint Denver” initiative, in conjunction with other major Denver festivals and the Colorado Festivals and Events Association, and encourages our selected vendors to help chalk it up GREEN.

Guests often wonder and lament the removal of the chalk drawings with a special street sweeper on Sunday night. The reason is simple: Each year during Denver Chalk Art Festival, the artists layer more than 175 pounds of fine pastel chalks on the pavement. By using a street sweeper to “pick up” the chalk at the end of the event, it ensures that the chalk will be properly disposed of and not pollute the Cherry Creek'keeping water clean and wildlife safe. “People don’t realize that when vendors and events improperly dump waste, it ends up in the catch basins and eventually pours directly into the Platte River, killing fish and plant life,” explains Mark Crews, Water Quality Investigator for the City & County of Denver. Other ways that Denver Chalk Art Festival is embracing the green initiative:

  • Recycle all cardboard, plastic and glass used during the event
  • Obtain and reuse “unusable” carpet samples and remnants for artist kneeling pads
  • Require food vendors to use recycled flatware and paper products
  • Minimize the power usage required of diesel-operated generators
  • Reuse as many banners and supplies as possible from previous years
  • Involve sponsors who are also eco-friendly
